Although independent, Union Power is part of a network of 26 electric co-ops in North Carolina, sharing a vision to build a brighter future for co-op members and communities through commitments to reliable, affordable, and sustainable electric service, as well as community and economic development.

Like all cooperatives, Union Power is governed by a Board of Directors, elected by our members, not shareholders.
Delivering Reliable, Affordable, & Sustainable Power
We are committed to delivering power that is affordable, reliable, and low carbon. More than half of our power comes from emissions-free nuclear, and we are increasingly incorporating renewable energy sources and grid-optimizing technologies to take this commitment even further.
North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives are national leaders in pursuing and deploying innovative technologies to help us achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, while also upholding our members’ priorities of affordable, reliable electricity.
Our Energy Mix
As the power supplier for 25 of North Carolina’s electric cooperatives, we maintain a diverse power portfolio that currently breaks down as follows:
Hydro: 2%
Coal: 6%

Through North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives, we acquire power through a number of ways, including:
Future ownership of a 16.55% share of a planned 1,360-megawatt hydrogen-capable combined-cycle natural gas plant in Person County with an anticipated 2028 operation date.
Ownership of a 13.33% share of the 750-megawatt combined-cycle natural gas plant at W.S. Lee Station in Anderson County, S.C. that began service in April 2018
Ownership and operation of natural gas peak generating plants located in Anson and Richmond counties. These plants provide a combined capacity of 672 megawatts.
Ownership and operation of peaking generators on the Outer Banks at Buxton (15 megawatts) and Ocracoke (3 megawatts)
Ownership of a 61.51% share of the Catawba Nuclear Station’s Unit 1 in York County, S.C.
How You Can Help
As a co-op member, you can help amplify the benefits of electricity by using it as a cleaner, cheaper, and smarter alternative to fossil fuels. Appliances, equipment, agricultural and industrial processes, and even your car, can now be powered by electricity, resulting in cost savings, lower emissions, and increased productivity and efficiency.
