Heat pumps work efficiently in mild weather, but when it gets cold enough they call on supplemental electric heat, which uses considerably more electricity. Long cold snaps, large jumps in thermostat setting and equipment problems all increase how often that happens, and it shows up on the bill quickly.
- Avoid raising the thermostat several degrees at once.
- Check whether the system is running in its normal heating mode.
- Have an HVAC professional inspect it if supplemental heat runs often.
