Protecting Farmers, Equipment, and Power Lines
Harvest season is one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the year. It represents the culmination of months spent preparing the land, planting crops, and putting in long days to keep the fields and equipment running smoothly. Making harvest safety a priority is just as important as bringing in a successful crop.
From navigating oversized equipment near power lines to working long hours that can lead to fatigue, harvest presents unique safety challenges. Taking a few extra precautions can help protect farmers, their equipment, and the electric system while keeping the harvest moving safely and efficiently.
- Chemical safety. Pesticides, fertilizers, and fuels are prominent in farming but can be hazardous. When handling these chemicals, follow the label instructions for storage, mixing, and disposal.
- Inspect farm equipment thoroughly. Check the lights, brakes, tires and attachments. Make sure all lights and reflective marking are visible when traveling on public roads.
- Look up before you move. Always be aware of overhead power lines when operating equipment and keep equipment at least 10 feet away from power lines.
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you come across a downed power line, never approach or drive over it as the power lines may be live. Notify Union Power of any downed lines at 704-289-3145.
Farmers, at Union Power, we appreciate your hard work and commitment to serving and providing for our communities. By practicing safe habits on the farm and around electrical equipment and power lines, you help ensure a safe, efficient, and successful harvest season.
