Storms are unpredictable and often beyond our control. However, preparing for storms is something we can control. For Union Power, being storm ready isn’t something we think about only when severe weather is forecasted; it’s a year-round priority we take seriously. Behind the scenes, crews and other personnel are constantly preparing, planning, and strengthening our system so we can stay one step ahead and respond to outages safely and efficiently. By taking the right steps and staying ready year-round, we can face whatever weather comes our way.
Your Storm Ready Checklist:
- Stock your pantry with a three-day supply of non-perishable foods such as canned goods, energy bars, water, and other essentials like diapers and toiletries.
- Keep cell phones, tablets, portable chargers, and other essential devices fully charged.
- Have sanitation and hygiene supplies ready (towelettes, soap, and hand sanitizer).
- Ensure your first-aid kit is stocked with pain relievers, bandages, and other medical essentials.
- Save Union Power’s outage number, 800-794-4423, in your phone before a storm occurs. If you experience an outage, call or text “OUT” to report it.
- Stay away from downed power lines and assume they are energized. If you encounter a downed line, report it immediately to Union Power.
- Protect electronics and appliances with surge protectors to help prevent damage from power fluctuations and outages.
Generator Safety:
- Never operate a generator in any enclosed area, as it produces high levels of carbon monoxide and other harmful gases.
- Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. Back feeding can energize power lines and seriously injure utility workers.
- Make sure your generator is properly sized for your needs and can power the essential items you want to operate during an outage.
- Store the generator in a dry, secure location when not in use.
