We Support Local Community & Civic Events

At Union Power, we are committed to our environment and to the communities we serve. We participate in various community and civic events in our service area.

To promote energy conservation, environmental stewardship, and the prevention of greenhouse gas emissions, Union Power employees have given out compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), information about energy efficiency, garden tool kits for kids, and plants, shrubs, and perennials. At many of the events we sponsor, one of our on-staff arborists is normally present to answer questions about proper planting procedures and vegetation maintenance.

Union County 4-H Golf Tournament

Each year, the Union County 4-H Youth Development Foundation sponsors an annual golf tournament. Union Power has consistently been a sponsor of this tournament. In 2011, the tournament was played at Eagle Chase Golf Course.

Ray Jenkins Memorial Golf Tournament

Union Power employees sponsor a golf tournament each year to support a local charity in honor of former lineman, Ray Jenkins, who died of lung cancer. Ray was a dedicated employee who wanted to do good for others. To honor him, the employees plan this annual event to do just that.

In 2011, Hospice was the recipient of over $38,300. Click here for more.

Big Lick Bluegrass Festival

Union Power Cooperative has been the title sponsor of the Big Lick Bluegrass Festival since its beginning in 2004. The festival is held each year at Big Lick Festival Park in Stanly County in April.

Oakboro 4th of July Celebration

The festival is held the week leading up to and ending on July 4th. Union Power Cooperative is the proud sponsor of the entertainment stage, featuring a popular local band every night of the celebration. On July 4th, a parade is held along with events all day on the Union Power stage. A fireworks show closes the celebration.

All proceeds raised from this event go to the Oakboro Volunteer Fire Department, and the money is used to purchase needed equipment and trucks and for continual training sessions for the volunteer firefighters.
